It was a good day for the Oakland Athletics as they dumped the Cleveland Indians 15-9 at Jacobs Field. Despite the loss it was a remarkable day for Indians Tomás Rangel, who went on quite a hitting spree with a 5 for 5 barrage.
The Cleveland first baseman told reporters after his big 5-hit performance, "I have mixed emotions about this game. Getting 5 hits is really something special, but losing the ballgame spoils it to a certain extent. It's sort of like the feeling you get when your mother-in-law drive over a cliff in your new sports car."
For his outstanding performance Rangel will get his name in the record book.
Quizzed by the press corps about his personal hitting theories, he responded, "I don't have any buzz words. I'm 'not dialed in' or 'in a zone,' as they say. As far as the hitting goes, I try to keep it simple...try not to over-think it. I try not to look into it too much. Basically the pitcher throws the ball, I try to pick up the spin, then in a split second decide to try to hit it. Today I picked up the spin very well."
T. Rangel walked in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 4th, hit an RBI single in the 5th, hit a two-run single in the 7th and hit a solo-shot off C. Edwards Jr in the 9th.
In 144 games this year Rangel has posted a .301 average and put up these numbers: 9 home runs, 79 RBIs and 95 runs scored. | | Injuries | Player | Injury | Out for... | Disabled List Status | C Carlos Romero | concussion | 2 days | On DL, eligible for return | | Team Information | Record overall | 73-89, .451 PCT | Position in Division | 5th, 18.0 GB | Record at home | 41-40, .506 PCT | Record on the road | 32-49, .395 PCT | Record in X-inning games | 5-8, .385 PCT | Record in one-run games | 18-29, .383 PCT | Record versus LHP | 19-26, .422 PCT | Record versus RHP | 54-63, .462 PCT | Record last 10 games | 6-4, .600 PCT | Record in April | 11-13, .458 PCT | Record in May | 11-16, .407 PCT | Record in June | 9-18, .333 PCT | Record in July | 9-17, .346 PCT | Record in August | 18-10, .643 PCT | Record in September | 15-13, .536 PCT | Record in October | 0-2, .000 PCT |
